Hemophilia – which treatment is the best?

Hemophilia - Abblood

Hemophilia is a heredity generic disorder that impairs body ability to control Blood clotting, which is used to restrict bleeding when blood vessels are broken or damaged. It is more likely to occur in males rather than females. People suffering from Hemophilia experience more frequent bleeds. Though this disorder is generally present in children at the time of birth, but its symptoms can be noticed from the bruises and injuries that the child suffer while walking or crawling.

Medical science has innovated numerous treatments for Hemophilia. However, you must get yourself well versed about the pros and cons of the treatments as the matter is related to your child.

Treatment with Replacement Therapy

The main treatment of Hemophilia is called Replacement therapy. In this replacement therapy, concentrates of clotting factor of Hemophilia A and Hemophilia B are gradually leaked and vaccinated in to vein. This replacement helps to compensate the missing clotting factor. Concentrates of Clotting factor of Hemophilia A and B can be made from human Blood. Though the blood is properly screened and treated for any infectious diseases. To avoid taking any risk you can also take concentrates which are not made from human blood. You can easily store and use them and it takes only fifteen minutes for the body to adapt with the clotting factor.

If you take replacement therapy on a regular basis, then it is called preventive therapy. However, you can use replacement therapy as and when needed. This is called demand therapy. Demand therapy is more expensive and quite risky.

Some people learn both the therapies so that they can practice them at home whenever needed. This is very crucial in terms of any emergency. You can learn from your Doctor about how to make the potions and then can take them for yourself as well as give the same to your children.

Loopholes of replacement therapy

  • Antibodies:
Your body might develop antibodies in response to the clotting factor. In such a scenario, Doctors may prescribe different doses, or they might use different clotting factors. Antibodies makes replacement therapy ineffective.
  • Damage to Joints and muscles:
If you go for Demand replacement therapy, then there are chances that in case of emergency a joint may get impaired or swollen or it may become dysfunctional for some time.
  • Virus and infections:
Clotting factors made from human blood might carry any viruses that cause HIV or Hepatitis. Though, there are techniques of proper screening of blood but chances are there.

Desmopressin:

Desmopressin or DDAVP is man-made hormone used to treat Hemophilia. DDAVP can be used by people with rare Hemophilia A. People with Hemophilia B and severe Hemophilia A can’t take the advantage of this hormone. Its regular usage is restricted as after some time your body might stop responding to the drug. It can be taken in certain condition like before playing any sport or before any treatment.

Gene Therapy

This is yet another therapy where the scientists are working on ways to spot on the faulty genes. This is still in progress and until now there are no final conclusions.

Other treatments

Steroids, injections, medicines and physical therapy can be given to patients for reducing pains and swelling on the bleeding joints.

Though the line of treatments are decided upon the criticality of Hemophilia.

Mild Hemophilia: DDAVP is usually recommended for patients with mild Hemophilia. Doctors can raise the levels of factor VIII.

Moderate Hemophilia: Demand Therapy or replacement Therapy is required only when bleeding occurs. Doctors might recommend DDAVP before any events or activities where any risk of bleeding is there.

Severe Hemophilia: It is quite critical hence preventive replacement therapy is actually used for treating patients with this condition. Therapy is given usually two to three times a week.

For both Hemophilia A and Hemophilia B, the main thing which is to be taken care off is bleeding. If bleeding is stopped, then the situation is under control. Scientists are working in full swings to develop a full proof Hemophilia treatment.
